| Causes of Cancer |
Many factors have been implicated in the origin of cancer.
Some of these factors are as follows:
- Viruses, including Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and human papilloma virus (HPV).
- Environmental and occupational exposures, such as ionizing and ultraviolet radiation and exposure to chemicals, including vinyl chloride, benzene and asbestos.
- Lifestyle factors, such as high-fat, low-fiber diets and tobacco and ethanol use.
- Medications, including alkylating agents and immunosuppreeants.
- Genetic factors, including inherited mutations, cancer-causing genes (oncogenes) and defective tumor-suppressor genes.
