Application of Drying

Application of Drying:
  1. In Tablet Manufacture:
i.             Tablet granulation requires moisturing of powder for agglomeration, but the MC should be within range. So, after formation of granules, there is an essential step for the drying of the granules.
ii.           Compression may be hampered if the MC is too high or too low. If too high, granules may stick within the die or punch. If too low, the granules will not be compressed together.
iii.         Tablet will be broken if moisture is present in excess. Smoothness of the tablet surface may also be hampered due to increase moisture. So, to prevent all these inconveniences the pharmacist should critically maintain the moisture content.
  1. In Tablet Coating Process: Before coating of a tablet, it is necessary to dry the core tablet properly; otherwise, after coating the tablet will degrade and the appearance of the coating will be hampered.
Fungi grow if moisture is present within the tablet. This may form an unimpressive appearance of the tablet and the consumer may avoid buying this preparation. So, drying is important [to present the economic and repercussions of the marketing such products.]
  1. Aspirin may be hydrolyzed in the presence of moisture and a hydrolytic aspirin may cause vomiting and gastric irritating. So, it is dangerous and injurious to health.
  2. In Capsule Manufacture: In capsule manufacture, the capsule shell must be kept in a controlled humidity. As these are hygroscopic, they may be damaged by moisture. [They may be slick to each other and their walls may be torn and the ingredients inside the capsule shell may leak out, consumer psychologically become unimpressed to appearance of the capsule.]
Antibiotics within the shell may be degraded in the presence of moisture. So, drying is necessary for granules or powders of such drug to be dispersed.
  1. In Liquid Preparations: In liquid preparations, drying is necessary for removing moisture from the container i.e. before filling, the container should be moisture free. They must be dried for storage of the drugs.
  2. In the Preparation of Powder Extracts: Drying is also applicable in the preparation of powder extracts of leaves, stems, stem buds, roots and other parts of medicinally important plants to preent degradative reactions and microbial growth.
  3. In the Preservation of Equipments: Excess moisture causes blocking of the equipments. So, drying is also important to continued and uninteracted function of equipments. Dryers are used for the sterilization of many pharmaceutical equipments and glass wires.
So, drying is a very important and useful until process in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
